When setting up your home network and connecting your IceTV compatible device to the internet, there are basically 3 options to choose from: Wireless (Wi-Fi), Ethernet over power and Ethernet.

The options that are available to you will depend on the device you have (what connections it has etc) and how your existing home network is set up.

Wireless (Wi-Fi)

Wireless networking (aka Wi-Fi) connects devices without cables. This allows you to keep your ADSL or cable modem where you'd like it—in the study—while giving your PVR access to IceTV’s electronic program guide (EPG) and other Interactive features.

Not all PVRs can be wirelessly networked, but a lot can. The Topfield 7100 ships with a Wi-Fi adaptor, giving it wireless networking out of the box. The Beyonwiz DP-S1 has Wi-Fi built-in. Most Macs and Media Center PCs come with Wi-Fi too.

Pros

• Easy to set up
• Fairly cheap
• No cables
• Once you have Wi-Fi, all Wi-Fi enabled devices can use it

Cons

• Range of about 30-70 metres indoors

Ethernet over power

Ethernet over power connects two or more devices using your home power wiring. Just plug one of the adaptors into a powerpoint near your PVR and another near your ADSL or cable modem and you’re set! There's no need to run messy Ethernet cables throughout the house or pay for expensive installations.

Ethernet over power is quicker than the Wi-Fi adaptors found on almost all PVRs, so it’s a great choice if you plan to stream video around the house. It's one of the easiest and quickest ways to get the internet from your study to your loungeroom.

All IceTV Interactive compatible PVRs, Mac and Media Center PCs come with built in ethernet, so they can be used with ethernet over power.

We sell two kinds of ethernet over power adaptors in the IceTV store: NetComm NP285 and NetComm NP201AV.

Pros

• Easy to set up
• Fairly cheap
• No cables
• Quick transfer speeds, allowing streaming of high def TV

Cons

• If you'd like to connect more than 2 devices, then more ethernet over power adaptors will need to be purchased

Ethernet

Ethernet is probably the simplest, yet most difficult solution to get the internet into your loungeroom. Simple because it only requires a single, cheap cable to be plugged in from your PVR to your ADSL or cable modem, but difficult because most of us would rather not have a cable running though the house. The proper solution is usually to run ethernet cables through your roof and walls, but this can be very expensive and require a lot of effort.
